Finishing First 2017. Review

FINISHING FIRST 2017 receives an enthusiastic response from participants, thanks to its forward-thinking concepts

(Quickborn, October 2017) Around 200 participants from Germany and abroad discovered all about the latest industry trends and solutions for digital transformation in print finishing at this year’s FINISHING FIRST at the Horizon Academy. In addition to customers from Germany and Austria, for the first time there were many printing professionals from Norhtern Europe, as well as dealers from Eastern European markets visiting the unique industry meeting point.

A focus of FINISHING FIRST 2017 was the presentation of more than 20 current solutions for the efficient processing of different types of printed products for varying quantities – from edition 1 to industrial production. In cooperation with the suppliers of printing machinery Hunkeler and Canon as well as the paper manufacturer Crown van Gelder, Horizon used this opportunity to present digital roller applications for the variable production of books, brochures and direct mail. Highlights included the new flagship of Horizon BQ Series: Thanks to its integrated auto calculation system the BQ-480 accelerates variable book production with EVA or PUR binding and enables quick format changes without manual settings. The presentation of various perfect binding applications for different production workflows proved to be very well received among the participants. In addition, visitors were given a chance to experience the power of the Horizon FoldLiner. The new combi-system of folding machine and saddle stitcher specially designed for the highly efficient production of saddle stitched booklets directly from printed sheet. The StitchLiner Mark III, which was first displayed at FINISHING FIRST 2016, since ordered by more than 100 customers worldwide, continued to attract a great deal of interest.

Alongside the presentation of current products and forward-thinking solutions, the programme at the Horizon Academy was enhanced by well-known representatives from the graphic arts industry. These professionals conveyed various approaches through which the industry can best prepare itself for future developments, making it clear that “ready-made technology” is moving more and more into the background, as compared to individual customized systems. There were practical examples of this from several segments of the printing industry: Patrick Piecha from Onlineprinters GmbH (, for example, addressed the specific processes and dynamics of online printing, whilst Esben Mols Kabell from demonstrated the opportunities offered by online distribution channels in the printing industry. Additionally, Hans Gut from Hunkeler AG discussed current trends in digital printing and finishing.

“Even during the event we got very positive feedback from many participants”, said Norbert Wienck, CEO of Horizon GmbH about the success of FINISHING FIRST 2017. Wienck continues: “As the new CEO of Horizon I have experienced first-hand the very varied requirements of our customers and gained valuable insights for my work. It is clear that the cooperative partnership between Horizon and our customers is working perfectly.”
